Here I am again, pushing the limits and seeing if I can day trade from Capri, Italy.
Back in 2012 we were in Bali and I was doing the same thing. At that time we could only get 0.5 to 1 Mbps in a villa outside of Seminyak. And day trading was near impossible. But apparently these days you can get a pretty good 4G connection in Bali. So well done to Bali for investing in your Internet infrastructure – something that will bring business and travellers.
So what about Capri? Well, it’s raining today and the hotel is full of visitors staying indoors – so the WiFi has slowed to 1.7 Mbps, from nearer 4.0 Mbps a couple of days ago. And unfortunately at those speeds (and quality of connection) I got 3 trading disconnects on IB during a 20 minute trade. That’s no fun – and for me is on the edge of practical day trading.
Capri is stunningly beautiful. And early in the morning before the tourists arrive or later at night when the tourists go back to the mainland, the local squares and cafes are charming. But Italy can be infuriating. Naples in falling apart. The fast ferry we took from Naples to Capri broke down and had to return to port. When we arrived at our hotel in Capri the electricity had been knocked out for 24 hours.
And fast Internet just doesn’t seem to be a priority. Which I don’t understand, Italy is in a slump and unemployment is stubbornly high at 11.1%. Investing in fast Internet would bring in business, jump start the gig economy here and allow digital nomads to work from all over Italy.
Good luck with your Emini trading this week.
